Effects of Art Therapy on Complex Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Posttraumatic Growth in Adolescents with Complex Trauma

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of art therapy on posttraumatic stress symptoms and posttraumatic growth in adolescents with complex trauma. The subjects of this study were 16 year old male high school students who were admitted to foster home in D city. The program consists of 23 sessions per a week for 60 minutes each. For the data analysis, Complex PTSD Interview (CPTSD-I) and K-PTGI (Korean Version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory) were used. Data analysis was done with pre-, post-, and post- test scores and the changes of the program step by step. At the beginning of the program, the trust between the subject and the researcher was formed, the safety base was established. In the mid-term, the subject experienced mourning based on memories of abuse by recalling the body's memories, such as Drawing-Meditation and asking the body. In the closing phase, we noticed the body through Drawing-Meditation, analyzed the positive aspect and energy of body through the body, and connected with daily life. The results of this study are as follows. First, Art therapy have been shown to be effective in alleviating complex posttraumatic stress symptoms in adolescents experiencing complex trauma. Second, Art therapy was found to be effective in posttraumatic adolescents experiencing complex trauma.
